Houston Woman Earns First Fast-Track Barbering Certificate

AUSTIN - In 2011, the 82nd Legislature passed Senate Bill 1170 which enables cosmetologists to earn a Class A Barber certificate.

Janie Rivera of Houston returned to school after 30 years to become a barber. She recently passed the written and practical exams to earn her Class A Barber certificate. Rivera has worked as a cosmetologist at Carolyn’s Beauty Salon for 13 years.

Rivera plans to keep both her Cosmetologist Operator license and her Class A Barber certificate in good standing. “Both licenses can open doors and I don’t know what my future holds for me,” she stated.
