Military Spouse Licensing - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. What is the benefit to applying for a license as a Military Spouse?
Your license can be issued faster because education and/or examination requirements for the license may be waived.
2. Is there a fee for using the Military Spouse application?
No. However, there is a fee for the license application you must submit with the Military Spouse application.
3. What are the requirements to use the Military Spouse option?
- You must be the spouse of a person serving on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States; AND
- You must either;
- Hold a current and substantially equivalent license in another state; or
- Within the last five years, you held the license in Texas that expired while you lived in another state for at least six months.
4. How do I apply for a license using this option?
Submit the following:
- Completed Military Spouse application form,
- Completed license application and fee,
- A copy of your spouse’s most recent Permanent Change of Station (PCS) travel order to Texas, and
- Proof of current out-of-state license (if applicable).
5. I have a current license issued by another state. How will I know if that license is substantially equivalent to the Texas license?
If the license you seek is not listed below, the Department will determine eligibility on a case-by-case basis.

6. Can I submit this application online?
No.
7. What if I have already submitted a license application and still need to complete my education and/or take an examination?
Send in everything except for the license application:
- The completed Military Spouse application (please note on your application that you have already submitted a license application)
- A copy of your spouse’s most recent Permanent Change of Station (PCS) travel order to Texas, and
- Proof of current out-of-state license, if applicable.
8. What if my spouse is part of the reserves or stand-down staff?
The law only applies to spouses of active duty personnel.
